In 2023, launching to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), we released Boobie Sista. The collection featured all kinds of beautiful clothes, homeware, and accessories adorned with heartfelt artwork from Kombumerri and Butchulla artist Zowie Baumgart, who was inspired by her best friend Kelly's diagnosis with stage 1 Grade 3 Oestrogen-positive breast cancer.

Showing the power of women supporting women, Kelly shared her story and Zowie shared her art with our community and joined us in raising awareness and funds for the NBCF. This year, Yarn have set a new goal of $10,000 for NBCF with the hope of raising more awareness and saving more lives. You can join the tribe of women and support in style with $2 going to NBCF with every sale of Boobie Sista.

Today, we’re reflecting on the incredible wave of love of women coming together. One of the messages that runs strong is empowering: supporting your ladies can sometimes literally mean saving lives. So today is about sharing some advice on how to help straighten your queens' crowns.

Being There For Her

Supporting your sisters has a knock-on effect: helping your friend can also mean indirectly helping your friend's children, family, and beyond.

Zowie showed her support during Kelly’s journey in many inspiring ways. She supported her friend through art, she shaved her head when Kelly started to lose her hair, and she raised money so Kelly and her family could go on holiday. Today, Zowie's art continues to help more women battling breast cancer.

Here are three key points to remember with your female support systems:

  • The power of women helping women should never be underestimated.
  • The importance of female empowerment is changing people’s worlds.
  • Appreciate every moment that we have with people - even if times aren't that bad.

Supporting Our Sisters - What Can You Do?

In many cases, behind every successful woman is a tribe. Going at life alone quickly gets lonely and scary. Even just having one other female energy around can change your whole world.

Boobie Sista is about raising awareness about breast cancer. Awareness breaks down barriers, shatters stigma, and encourages tough conversations. But it also shares the message about prevention and early detection which can ultimately save lives.

And that’s what sisterhood is all about. It’s about bringing the community together to change our little worlds.

The Boobie Sista story reflects in many other women across Australia. Without Zowie and the rest of her Boobie Brigade, Kelly’s breast cancer journey wouldn’t have been the same. It didn’t just change Kelly’s world - but the world of her family and daughter.

So what can we do to support each other? Here are 10 easy things that you can do to support your women right now, through good times and bad.

1. Listen

As women, we often don’t need our problems to be solved. They often CAN’T be solved.

Whether you share a coffee, a phone call, or a massive paragraph of a text message, you can solve many of the world's issues by solving nothing at all. The power of simply listening is strong.

In the end, it's often just about validating feelings to make us feel less crazy. (Because, you know, we often can feel crazy.)

2. Make time to hang out

Everyone gets busy - but making time for someone is one of the most powerful ways to show your support for important girls in your life. It can be a call, a coffee, or a date night.

Squeezing the queens into the schedule is an endorphins booster. Don't push each other under the rugs.

3. Intentional gifting

Knowing what women need is an art that has confused men for millennia. When you have the telepathic ability to know what to buy her, you can change the course of a woman’s day.

If it’s a bottle of wine after a break-up, some painkillers at that time of the month, or even some pink and powerful Boobie Sista goodies, let them know you're thinking about them. Especially if their love language is gift giving!

4. Food

Yes, sometimes we might just be hangry. Don’t let your ladies go hungry! Whether you’re cooking dinner at home or you treat them out to a meal, making someone not hungry is the way to many women's hearts.

5. Include them in the invite

Some people are renowned for turning down an invite. Why? Well, there are whole bunch of reasons.

Sometimes our social batteries are completely burnt out. So often, women just have so much to do that there isn’t any room in the day. Sometimes, the reasons can be due to tougher struggles.

But invite them anyway. The small gesture of letting them know that they’re invited can make them feel included and loved - even if they can't accept it.

6. Take time out on Country

Nature heals and resets you. Connecting your feet to Country, breathing in the air, and going for a swim are some of the most basic and cheap ways to bring your ladies a dopamine boost. It's true: "take care of Country and Country will take care of you."

Appreciating the land, water, and air is a great way for wholesome reflection on life. Head to the park, stroll down the beach, take the dog for a walk, or go camping for a night or two. You're guaranteed to return feeling refreshed.

7. Lifting up each others strengths

Queen Bee Syndrome’ is the antithesis of everything women need to achieve equality in this world. Doing it alone to try to achieve higher than your sisters makes women lonely. Especially in male-dominated environments like business, ladies can quickly get drawn into the lie that pushing other women down allows you to get to or stay at the top.

In the long run, girls supporting girls lifts everybody up. The best long-term solutions for you and your girls is to play to each others strengths.

8. Pick up the kids

Yes, we love the kids. The light of our lives and the source of all messy houses.

By most mothers need a little break from time to time. And we are so grateful for someone to look after our prides and joys for a little bit. It gives us ladies a few hours to go back to basics: get some sleep, have a bath, and cook some food... all highly underestimated necessities.

9. Do something that makes you laugh

The power of laughter transcends the knowledge of science. Do something lighthearted and let yourself be taken over by giggles.

10. Expecting nothing in return

We can never fully understand what someone is going through. Sometimes the best we can do is just let them know we’re there for them. When someone is going through the toughest of times, just a simple text message to let them know they’re in your thoughts can be enough to make someone feel loved - even if they don't reply.

Expecting nothing in return is powerful: it gives them space to feel what they need to feel. Just let them know you’re there when they’re ready.

Accepting Support

One of the most difficult things for some women to do is accept the support of people around them. There’s a stigma that it makes you weak or incapable.

But the truth is, we need community; we're social beings after all. In the end, we're all stronger women by accepting the help of the females around us.

Accepting support doesn’t just help you. It’s also a powerful way of showing appreciation for the person who reached out. The cycle of women supporting women continues!

A common problem for women who may feel like a burden or ‘annoying’ is separating yourself. Avoid doing this and be honest with your ladies. Avoiding calls, meetings, and text messages from time to time is okay, but don’t avoid them forever.

If times get tougher, join a support group. There are some incredible support groups across Australia designed specifically for women, like Yarning Circles or Band of Sisters. The NBFC also have support groups specifically for people battling breast cancer.

Support groups come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, so finding the right one for you can sometimes prove tricky. But allowing yourself a space to find other women who may be able to relate to your story is a tried and tested method.

Real Queens Fix Each Other’s Crowns

This is something Zowie took quite literally when she joined Kelly and they shaved their heads at the same time. You don't have to take it so literally! But giving to your tribe of women will always come back to you. From small to big gestures, you can change her day or her world with some simple acts of kindness.

You can join us in our goal to reach another $10,000 for NBCF. Each Boobie Sista product sold donates $2 and look out for new products that will be on sale soon! We do this not only for her, but for her family, children, parents, friends, and everyone that loves her.
